What's New in Sioux Falls: Convention Center Study and November Events

Sioux Falls just restarted its convention center study, a new plaza opened at Falls Park, an indoor adventure park is on the way, and November is filling up fast with the Home Expo, the Parade of Lights, and more.

Here is what is new in the Sioux Falls area this week: the city restarted a serious conversation about its convention center, a brand-new public plaza opened next to Falls Park, an indoor adventure park is coming to the west side, and the November calendar is stacking up with the Home Expo, holiday market, and the Parade of Lights. I'm Jennifer Krosch, a Realtor with eXp Realty, and I keep this local beat because what is being planned, opened, and celebrated tells you where the metro is headed and what life here actually looks like week to week.

About this article

Details on specific projects, businesses, and event dates come from public reporting by SiouxFalls.Business, the City of Sioux Falls, the City of Hartford, the Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce, the Tea Area Chamber, the Brandon Valley School District, the City of Lennox, the South Dakota Department of Transportation, the Sioux Falls Home Expo, Levitt at the Falls, Downtown Sioux Falls, and Travel South Dakota, current as of this writing. I have only included details I could confirm in the last week's sources; if a date or figure is not here, it has not been publicly announced yet.

A convention center study is back on the table

On Monday, October 26, Experience Sioux Falls and Forward Sioux Falls restarted the effort to explore options for new convention space in Sioux Falls. This matters because the existing Sioux Falls Convention Center opened in 1996 at 1201 N. West Ave., and by the numbers that get quoted in these conversations, it is now smaller than the convention centers in Fargo and Rapid City, our main regional competitors for events. Officials have also pointed at the adjacent Sioux Falls Arena and called it far beyond its useful life, which raises the question of what a redevelopment of that block could look like.

This is a study, not a shovel-ready project. There is no site selected and no price tag yet, and past efforts to size up a new center have come and gone without a decision. But the fact that the city's tourism and business organizations are formally starting fresh is a real signal about how Sioux Falls sees its next decade: more events mean more hotel nights, more visitors, and more downtown foot traffic, all of which ripple into housing demand and neighborhood vitality.

Jacobson Plaza Phase 2 opens at Falls Park

Downtown just gained a genuinely lovely new space. Jacobson Plaza Phase 2 opened on October 15 just north of Falls Park, a $2.65 million project that turned a former scrap yard into public parkland. The new plaza adds a large level lawn for events and gatherings, a scenic overlook facing the upper falls, and improved pedestrian connections that link Falls Park, the Levitt Shell, and the Steel District into one walkable loop.

Two details are worth knowing if you are new to town or considering a move downtown. First, more than 90% of the funding came from Garry Jacobson and Rob Everist through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, a reminder that much of what makes Sioux Falls beautiful is funded by people who believe in the city. Second, the city's Christmas tree, formerly at the Washington Pavilion, now anchors the plaza, which means Winter Wonderland gets a new and very visible home this holiday season. For buyers weighing downtown or near-downtown neighborhoods, this is more public amenity attached to the Falls Park area than ever before.

NRG Adventure Park is coming to the west side

Families, this one is for you. NRG Adventure Park, a chain that bills itself as an extreme indoor playground, announced on October 15 that it will open in Sioux Falls at 1401 W. 41st St., in the former Hobby Lobby space between Grange and West avenues. The concept is a climate-controlled indoor play venue with trampolines, ball pits, climbing structures, slides, foam pits, a ninja course, dodgeball, a dedicated toddler area for kids 7 and under, and an arcade.

The venue plans single-visit tickets, memberships, and full-venue buyouts for birthday parties and events. No opening date has been announced yet, so treat this as coming soon rather than mark-your-calendar. For parents, though, the promise of a year-round indoor option on the west side is the kind of thing that changes winter Saturdays, and it is exactly the type of family amenity relocating buyers ask me about when they are comparing where to land in the metro.

The November calendar is filling up

November is quiet after Halloween weekend, but it is far from empty, and the first full weekend is the one to circle. The Sioux Falls Home Expo runs Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8 at the Sioux Falls Arena at the Denny Sanford Premier Center complex, with admission free. Hours are 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. Whether you are planning a renovation, building new, or just starting to think about it, it is the rare chance to meet lots of local contractors and vendors in one afternoon. Right across the metro, the November Flea Market and Holiday Show takes over the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, and Levitt at the Falls hosts Levitt UpClose with The Two Tracks on Friday, November 6 at 8:00 p.m.

The holiday season then arrives in earnest. The Sioux Empire Arts & Crafts Show holiday edition, the area's largest handcrafted holiday shopping event with 280-plus artisans, runs November 13 and 14 at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. Then comes the big one: the 34th annual First Bank & Trust Parade of Lights on Friday, November 27, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. along Phillips Avenue downtown, free and family-friendly. The Sioux Falls Jingle Bell Run at Fawick Park happens earlier that same day, so you can run, then watch the lights, then officially call the holiday season open.

Around the metro: Brandon, Tea, Hartford, and Lennox

Brandon's school district is the story there right now. Burkman Valley Elementary, the district's fifth elementary school on the east side of Brandon, opened its doors in August 2026 to relieve crowding at Robert Bennis and Brandon Elementary, and the Brandon Valley Middle School expansion, a roughly $6.79 million addition with 10 new classrooms, a wrestling room and multi-purpose space, a kitchen expansion, and more parking, is opening for the 2026-27 school year. The district also started this fall with about 110 more students than last year. For anyone house hunting in Brandon, that is the practical picture: schools are growing because the rooftops are growing.

Tea's chamber calendar has a genuinely busy stretch coming. Big Country Motors held its ribbon cutting on October 22 at 140 N. Carla Ave., Shades of HUNKS comes to the Prairie View Event Center on Friday, November 6, and comedian Tammy Pescatelli plays the Dakota Gathering in Tea on Saturday, November 7. Small-town chambers do not schedule like this unless the community is growing, and Tea keeps proving the point.

Hartford is already thinking Christmas. The city's Hometown Christmas Celebration is set for Sunday, December 6, 2026, and it features what the city describes as the biggest lighted parade in the region, along with a craft show, Santa and Mrs. Claus visits, horse-drawn wagon rides, caroling, a kids carnival, and fireworks. A Kwik Star ribbon cutting in Hartford is scheduled for the same day, which is worth noting for anyone watching new retail land in the community. And in Lennox, the city wrapped up its Oriole Avenue road construction project, with the road reopening Friday, October 23, 2026, after a final season of dirt work and equipment cleanup.

Infrastructure watch: the viaducts and the rail corridor

Two state-level studies are quietly moving that affect commuters and property values. The South Dakota Department of Transportation announced on October 13 a study of replacing the 10th and 11th Street viaducts in Sioux Falls, the aging bridges that carry traffic over the railroad corridor west of downtown, and it is seeking public input on a railroad corridor analysis and crossing-safety study with an open house on October 28. These are early-stage, years-away projects, but they are exactly the kind of infrastructure work that shapes which neighborhoods feel connected, and connected neighborhoods hold their value.

What this means for buyers and sellers

Here is the realtor's take. The pattern in this week's news is that Sioux Falls keeps investing in the things that make a city livable: public space at Falls Park, indoor recreation for families, event infrastructure that draws visitors, and schools that keep pace with growth in Brandon and beyond. For buyers, that means the neighborhoods near these amenities, Falls Park, the west-side retail corridors, and new schools, tend to hold demand and resale appeal. For sellers, it means you are marketing a community that has a full calendar and a long to-do list of improvements, which is a genuinely good story to tell in your listing.

The bigger point is simple: the metro is moving, and the momentum is spread across Sioux Falls, Brandon, Tea, Hartford, and Lennox rather than concentrated in one corner. If you are thinking about buying, selling, or relocating, I would love to help you read what all of it means for your specific situation. That is what I do every day, and there is no better time than right now to start the conversation.
